As Cal State Long Beach celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2009, the university is starting a new tradition for a very special group of alumni—the Golden Grads. These alumni graduated 50 or more years ago and helped build the foundation of what the university has become today. Each year, the newest 50th anniversary class will be inducted into the Golden Grads tradition.
One of those Golden Grads is Maureen (Hutchinson) Book, who earned a B.S. in education in 1957 and an M.A. in educational administration in 1964. "I was a member of the first freshman class at Long Beach State when it became a four-year institution in September 1953," she recalled. "We watched the campus grow and change as we completed our four years and graduated in 1957. Being part of something as special as Long Beach State was rare and very personal. When I visit campus now and see how large it is and the growth that has occurred since we began in 1953, I am impressed and pleased that I was part of its beginning."
The CSULB Alumni Association will host a Golden Decade celebration during Homecoming Weekend this November, including a celebration for all Golden Grads from the classes of 1949-59 as well as a special Class of 1959 50th reunion.
The new Golden Grads Web site—www.csulb.edu/goldengrad—is the central place for information about this new tradition. Alumni can share memories of their time on campus (and find out how to share memorabilia with the university) as well as update their contact information.
Although there are 6,849 alumni from the classes of 1949-59, the university has information on only about 2,000 of these grads. Alumni also can update their information at www.csulb.edu/alumni or by calling 562-985-5252.
