Engineering Professor Earns Advising HonorEric Besnard, a professor in CSULB's Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, has been named the recipient of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) 2009 Faculty Adviser Award.
The award is presented to the AIAA faculty adviser of a chartered student branch who, in the opinion of student branch members and the AIAA Student Activities Committee, has made outstanding contributions to his/her students in local, regional and national activities. Besnard was also selected to receive the honor because of his passion for aerospace and his ongoing efforts in encouraging students in the field through hands-on projects.
Much of that "hands-on" work is for the California Launch Vehicle Education Initiative (CALVEIN), the rocket program on campus that includes several projects involving AIAA. As head of CALVEIN, Besnard helps students design, build and launch large scale rockets, each with its own unique characteristics.
Two Cal State Long Beach students received awards for outstanding posters and a third student received an award for outstanding oral presentation at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in Florida.Students Earn Biomedical Research Honors
Christian Aguilera received the Outstanding Poster in the Microbiological Sciences award for his poster "ENV6, a Constitutively Expressed Yeast Gene Involved in Vacuolar Functions," Theresa Austria earned the Outstanding Poster in the Molecular Biological Sciences honor for her poster "Aglycosylated Antimannan Antibody M1ig1 has a Reduced Ability to Mediate Complement Activation and Phagocytosis," and Marc Quijano received the Outstanding Presentation in the Molecular Biological Sciences award for his presentation on "The Relationship between Tectonic Plate Activity and Genetic Variability in the Western Fence Lizard, Sceloporus occidentalis."
In all, 11 CSULB students' papers were peer reviewed and selected for presentation.
